Talk:Ancient Mermaimon

From Wikimon

I am slightly unsure about the Crystal Blow bit, so could someone please translate that bit on their own to check? I'm pretty confident about the rest, though.KrytenKoro06 13:35, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

mistranslation[edit]

mistranslation as shown by theigo in his post about this digimon on WTW

The Wikimon translation of the attack alleges that it involves crystallizing water into "supersolids" and that should raise some eyebrows. Supersolid may be a real thing, as in a real state of matter but the term is slightly deceiving. The "super" does not designate something that is more solid than other solids, it refers to supersolids having the properties of superfluids in addition to solids. So if anything a "supersolid" in the scientific sense would not be the hardest material imaginable, but a sort of flowing, slippery kind of "sponge" (perhaps... only microscopic amounts of supersolids have been produced). This does not sound like an especially effective attack and would be an embarrassing mistake to make, except Bandai did not make it. The mention of "supersolids" and its accompanying link to Wikipedia seem to be a translation mistake. The scientific term "supersolid" translates to 超固体 in Japanese whereas the wording used in AncientMermaimon's profile is 超硬度, "super hardness" and this meaning is corroborated by the profile's official translation which uses the simpler wording "super-hard substance". This shows once again, that if you don't want to be taken for a ride, you have to take notice of the small details and double-check your sources.
