Pyontomon is one of five Digimon created as a reward for making a minimum pledge of ¥300,000 to the Digimon Adventure 20th Anniversary Memorial Story Project crowdfunding campaign on Campfire.[1] An individual who goes by the online handle of "Ryōsagi" 「りょうさぎ」 was one of the backers of the ¥300,000 tier, and Pyontomon was designed as their partner Digimon by Digimon designer Watanabe Kenji based on their input and wishes. As part of the reward, Bandai later sent Ryōsagi model sheets and finalized key art of Pyontomon by Watanabe, as well as a one-of-a-kind plush doll of Pyontomon (which they received by January 23, 2021).[2]
The inspiration for Pyontomon is rooted in Ryōsagi's fondness for rabbits. Pyontomon is based on the jackalope, a creature from North American folklore that resembles a jackrabbit with the horns of an antelope. Ryōsagi reasoned that if the partner Digimon created through the Memorial Story Project are "officially produced, but not official (canon)," then they could have a Digimon based on an "Unidentified Mysterious Animal", an animal that "exists, but does not exist."[3]
To date, Pyontomon has never appeared in any official Digimon media.
