Homeros[edit]
Shouldn't we mention Homeroes is the host computer of the Illiad? ShikaSS (talk) 06:05, 28 July 2017 (CDT)
- Where does it say that? --Ainz ( talk | contribs ) 06:32, 28 July 2017 (CDT)
"The" before "Digital World: Iliad"[edit]
Referring to Muur's edit comment in the Factorial Area page: "in the digital world illiad" is not correct english. you wouldnt say "its an area in the new york city"
Should this be standardised? I'm not sure how it was localised in-game, but Bandai Namco US social media seems to standardise it as "the Digital World: Iliad" so I lean towards this. [1] [2] [3] [4]
I also don't think "Digital World: Iliad" and NYC are fully comparable because 'world' and 'city' are different nouns, some location proper nouns do take the definite article (in the Old World, in the United Kingdom, in the Pacific (Ocean), etc.). --Garmmon (talk) 04:58, 30 July 2026 (CDT)
- The full name is "Digital World: Iliad", but in-game and in synergized media it's called just "Iliad" plenty. I think "Iliad" is a more natural way to reference it whenever its not explicitly required (like in a direct profile translation).KrytenKoro06 (talk) 10:59, 7 August 2026 (CDT)
- Also "the city of new york" would be the way that is phrased.KrytenKoro06 (talk) 11:00, 7 August 2026 (CDT)
- And the equivalent being "the digitial world of illiad", but thats a needless amount of words when you an just say "in illiad" or "in digital world illiad".Muur (talk) 11:02, 7 August 2026 (CDT)
- The example line I'm referring to is (Factorial Area page): Factorial Area (ファクトリアル・エリア Fakutoriaru Eria) is an area in Digital World: Iliad.
- At least for the introductory line, I would prefer to use the full name, and I wouldn't say 'the' is needless if removing it makes it ungrammatical..like how people don't usually say "an area in Pacific Ocean" or "an area in Digital World"? If no one is opposed, I would return "the" to it for consistency with 'Digital World' and with official social media, unless someone has a (maybe in-game) source where "in Digital World: Iliad" is grammatical. --Garmmon (talk) 12:04, 7 August 2026 (CDT)
- Wikis can't just have ungrammatical sentences, that's just not professional. as for your other examples, those are different because you would say "in the pacific ocean" and "in the digital world". those are correct grammar, whilst "in the digital world illiad" isnt.Muur (talk) 12:33, 7 August 2026 (CDT)
- Would you be able explain why you feel "in the Digital World: Iliad" is not correct grammar? All the official social media posts I've seen so far use "in the Digital World: Iliad", and as you mentioned there are location proper nouns that take "the", like Pacific Ocean/Digital World. For a fictional location proper noun, I believe the grammar of whether it takes the definite article would be decided by the writers (refer: Wikipedia page on the English definite article under Geographic usage, there are no fixed rules for its use), and I have not seen an official source use "in Digital World: Iliad" without "the". But if you have feel free to share.--Garmmon (talk) 12:52, 7 August 2026 (CDT)

- Because it starts with "Digital World", "the" will probably feel more natural because the first word is an adjective - it's basically like saying "the red sea" or "on the planet - Earth" (although "On Planet Earth" is also a common way to phrase that, and the main Iliad page itself uses "the world of Iliad" in places. Honestly, I think the social media posts are in the wrong but it's workable here). "Iliad" would be comparable to Saturn or France, here -- you'd just say "in Iliad" instead of "in the Iliad". The "the" usually isn't dropped from a placename until it's been subsumed enough to feel like a full proper noun rather than adjectival (for example "the Antarctic" is still recognizably adjectival, while "Greenville" is not.)
- For examples, the main Iliad page has "The host computer in charge of governing Digital World: Iliad is known as Homeros.", but doesn't otherwise use a Digital World: Iliad formation in prose. GraceNovamon uses "the".KrytenKoro06 (talk) 14:24, 7 August 2026 (CDT)
- whilst technically the full name is "Digital World: Illiad", "Digital World" is unnecessary. Its not like anyone would say Kingdom instead of United Kingdom. Anyway, I think there's also when you get ESL anime fans who will translate in the most overly literal was possible. Could it "technically" be accurate? maybe. But humans don't talk like monotone robots. there's fansubs with super over literal translations, and then more natural sounding ones. "In the Digital World Illiad" is not natural, unlike "the United Kingdom". Heck, "The", could be said to be in the name of the UK itself.Muur (talk) 19:35, 7 August 2026 (CDT)
- I think naturalness is subjective especially for a fictional term; I found more sources use "in the Digital World: Iliad" (based on a quick Google search, with "the" gives 12900 results while without gives only 358) which implies more people find it natural to use "the" with it than not? I understand Muur finds it unnatural (I myself don't think so), but we shouldn't be basing grammar on just one individual's naturalness judgement.
- Anyway given how subjective naturalness is, my point is I would rather base on official sources where possible.. I understand from Kryten's comment that official sources are not consistent (and I'm fully aware of Bandai's English standard), but as "the" is more commonly used they may have a style guide for it, so I would lean towards it. Moreover the main Iliad page is the same page that uses "the Titan" instead of the more common "the Titans" used in TS/DCG so I'm less inclined to count that page.
- Regarding whether the DW part is unnecessary, as mentioned above, I think it would be clearer to unfamiliar readers to use the full name in the intro line. I am okay with referring to it as just "Iliad" in subsequent mentions and I think there is no argument on using "in Iliad".--Garmmon (talk) 21:25, 7 August 2026 (CDT)
