Background[edit]
Born in 1970 in Tokyo, Japan, the young Oikawa Yukio was a shy and lonely boy. His only friend in the world was Hida Hiroki, who was obsessed with the Digital World. The two made contact with the Digital World, and would spend hours and hours playing video games and interacting with the Digimon through Hiroki's game console. Eventually, Hida Chikara, Hiroki's father, became worried about his son's obsession and forbade the boys from talking about the Digital World in the Hida household, essentially putting an end to their contact with it. Although the boys were heartbroken, Yukio and Hiroki remained lifelong friends, making a vow that one day they will visit the Digital World together.
As adults, Yukio became a geneticist, working along with Ichijouji Ken's father, while Hiroki became a police officer. Hiroki married a woman named Fumiko and the two had a son in 1993, Iori, though Yukio didn't have much contact with either. Even their new adult responsibilities didn't stop the two friends, who continued to work on finding a way to enter the Digital World. In 1995 during the Hikarigaoka incident, Yukio made briefly met with journalist Takaishi Natsuko, who had been investigating the incident meaning to discuss his hypothesis that Hikarigaoka was a gateway to the Digital World.
In the summer of 1999, Hiroki took a bullet for an important figure and died. Yukio was devastated, unable to get over the death of his only friend. On August 3rd, 1999, he was on the pier at Tokyo Bay, watching tearfully as the Digital World appeared in the sky. However, before he could do anything, the disembodied spirit of Vamdemon offered to help him get to the Digital World. The desperate Yukio agreed, and Vamdemon entered his body, from then on acting as a latent force that directed Yukio's actions.
Digimon Adventure 02[edit]
In the following years, Oikawa used his DNA to create two half-human, half-Digimon entities, Archnemon and Mummymon, who did his bidding. During the funeral of Ichijouji Osamu, he spotted Osamu's younger brother, Ken, and sensed that he was a Chosen Child. He proceeded to send Ken an anonymous email, directing him to the World of Darkness and corrupting him. He brought the technology for Evil Rings and Dark Towers from the World of Darkness and gave them to Ken, who became the Digimon Kaiser and used the technology to try and take over the Digital World. Oikawa had hoped that with Ken in control of the Digital World, he would have an easier time thinning the Digital World's defenses and getting in. However, the Chosen Children interfered.
When Ken shed off his Digimon Kaiser persona, Oikawa sent Archnemon and Mummymon to fight the Chosen Children head-on and continue where the Kaiser had left off. The two formulated a plan to have Black War Greymon, an artificial Digimon Archnemon created using a hundred Dark Towers, destroy the seven Holy Stones that kept the balance of the Digital World in check. However, the Chosen Children managed to stop them. Thus, Oikawa moved to the final phase of his plans, using a more direct approach.
On Christmas, Oikawa spread Dark Towers across the Real World and had Archnemon and Mummymon open Digital Gates all over the world. While the Chosen Children were busy taking the Dark Towers down and returning the Digimon that entered through the gates to their proper place, he sent Archnemon and Mummymon to kidnap twenty children from around Tokyo metropolitan, luring them with promises of becoming smart and athletic like the famous Ichijouji Ken. The next day, they kidnapped Ken as well, and Oikawa scanned Ken's Dark Seed and spread it to the other children. They made their way in a truck to Hikarigaoka, where Demon stopped the truck, demanding to have Ken. As the Chosen Children fought Demon, Oikawa, Archnemon and Mummymon escaped, not before Oikawa told the Dark Seed children to come back to Hikarigaoka on December 31st.
The three hid away in a vacation house in the mountains, but Black War Greymon found them there, intending to kill Oikawa. He revealed to them that he had sensed Archnemon and Mummymon weren't fully Digimon, and that there was something not human in Oikawa as well. However, they received some unexpected help from Yagami Taichi, Yagami Hikari and War Greymon, who were bent on keeping Oikawa alive to get answers from him. Oikawa, Archnemon and Mummymon took advantage of this turn of events and escaped back to Tokyo.
On December 29th, Oikawa came face to face with Hida Iori. Although he did not initially recognize the boy, he was shocked to see the name "Hida" on Iori's Kendo equipment sack, and prevented Archnemon and Mummymon from attacking him after Iori confirmed that his father was Hida Hiroki. He spent much of that evening recalling his friendship with Hiroki and lamenting his past. The next day, Oikawa located one of the seeded children, Kawada Noriko, whose Dark Seed bloomed early, and absorbed its energy, restoring some of Vamdemon's energy. Hida Chikara appeared and tried to talk to Oikawa's heart, apologizing for everything he had done and offering his hand in friendship. Oikawa was deeply moved and was intending to accept Chikara's proposal, but the spirit of Belial Vamdemon that resided inside him veered him from this and tried to harm Chikara with a huge burst of dark energy. Black War Greymon stepped before Chikara and took in the blast, saving the man from certain death at the cost of his own life.
On December 31st, Oikawa and the remaining seeded children met on the bridge in Hikarigaoka, and he used their power to open a gate to another world. However, it wasn't the Digital World, but rather a world of dreams. Vamdemon used its powers to speak to Oikawa and remind him of his manipulations, and came out of Oikawa's body to absorb the rest of the children's Dark Seeds. Oikawa then to fall to the ground, unconscious.
Following Belial Vamdemon's defeat, Iori went back to the world of dreams to help the fallen Oikawa, dragging him to the edge of the tear between the two worlds. This way, he gave Oikawa a chance to talk to Pipimon, his long-lost Digimon partner. However, Oikawa was close to death, and didn't have much time left. To atone for his deeds and help the world he loved so much, Oikawa used the other world's power to fulfill a dream of his own; with that, Oikawa's body was deleted, and the digital particles transformed into a host of butterflies, which spread across the Digital World, restoring peace and beauty to it.
25 Years Later[edit]
In 2028, Oikawa's presence still resides in the Digital World, protecting it and preserving its beauty.
