The Toei Anime Fair (東映アニメフェア Tōei Anime Fea) was a series of biannual anime film events aimed at children that were held by Toei Company from 1990 to 2002. It was an animation-focused successor to Toei's earlier Great Cartoon Parade/Toei Cartoon Festival (まんが大行進 Manga daikōshin/東映まんがまつり Tōei Manga Matsuri), first held in 1964, which additionally featured films based on Toei's tokusatsu series.[1]

Each Toei Anime Fair consisted of a double or triple bill of animated short films or featurettes, which were usually produced by Toei Animation and based on its then-ongoing children's anime series. They were screened in theaters across Japan during the spring and summer breaks of the Japanese school year. On each Fair's opening day, a tie-in stage greeting event, featuring voice actors and costume characters from the Fair's films, was typically held at the Marunouchi Toei theater in Tokyo. Promotional items tying into the featured films, such as trading cards, were often given away as a bonus for advance ticket purchases at participating theaters.

Although it was not a part of Toei Anime Fair, a triple billed animated films such as Ghost Sweeper Mikami: The Great Paradise Battle!!, Ranma 1/2: Super Indiscriminate Decisive Battle! Team Ranma vs. the Legendary Phoenix and Heisei Inu Monogatari Bow: Genshi Inu Monogatari Bow, was shown in August 1994. In 1998, there is no "Toei Anime Fair", but a new edition of The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots alongside Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy were released in double-feature in spring 1998. In summer 1998, the live-action films Zukkoke Trio: The Tale of Phantom Thief X and Hanako of the New Toilet were released in double-feature.

The Toei Anime Fair series ceased after 2002. Except for two one-off events in the mid-late 2000s, Toei did not hold any events of this type again until the 2019 revival of the Toei Cartoon Festival.[1]

The first seven Digimon films all premiered at Toei Anime Fair events.

History[edit]

Great Cartoon Parade/Toei Cartoon Festival[edit]

Toei Anime Fair[edit]

From 1990 onward, the Toei Cartoon Festival was replaced with two separate events: the Toei Anime Fair for anime films, and the Toei Super Hero Fair for tokusatsu films.[1] Although the Super Hero Fair was short-lived and only three such events were held, the Anime Fair continued for twelve years.

The final Anime Fair was the 2002 Summer Toei Anime Fair, at which Digimon Frontier: Revival of the Ancient Digimon!! was shown. It was the only Fair to be deemed a box office failure.[2]

In the following seventeen years, Toei ran only two similar events: in 2006, Digimon Savers The Movie: Ultimate Power! Activate Burst Mode!! and We Are Pretty Cure Splash☆Star: Tic-Tac Critical Moment! were screened together as a double bill (albeit without any specific Anime Fair-style branding);[3] and in 2009, Burst Out! 3D Toei Anime Festival was held.

Toei Cartoon Festival (present)[edit]

Events in the style of the Anime Fair were not held regularly again until 2019, when Toei revived the Toei Cartoon Festival as an annual event. As with the original Cartoon Festival before the Anime Fair/Super Hero Fair split, these events include both anime and tokusatsu films.[1]
