Name Etymology Name: Ohakadamon Kanji/Kana: おはかだモン Digimoji: | Ohakada ph. The phrase "o-haka da" 「お墓だ（おはかだ）」 means "it's a grave" (alternatively, "tomb"). Year Active 1997 Video Game Digital Monster Ver. 1 Ohakadamon—so named in the guidebook Digital Monster: I'll Become the Digimon King, Mon!—is the grave marker that is displayed in the Digital Monster virtual pet series when a Digimon dies. Outside of this book, official Japanese materials (including instruction manuals) generally do not refer to the grave marker as anything but a simple grave marker, and the name "Ohakadamon" has never been used anywhere else. Different Digital Monster versions have different grave marker designs: Digital Monster Vers. 1, 3 and 5 depict, as I'll Become the Digimon King, Mon! characterizes it, a Christian cross Digital Monster Vers. 2 and 4 depict a stele Digital Monster Ver. S also features a third grave marker/Ohakadamon design for its fourteen new Digimon: a totem pole In the international versions of the Digital Monster line, "DigiMon," the grave marker/Ohakadamon is replaced with a sprite of a late 1990s-style personal computer. This is part of a general trend in the localization process to replace the imagery of death: instead of dying, Digimon (or, as it is spelled in this localization, "DigiMon") are characterized as returning to the "Megalithic Mainframe" from whence they came. From the Digimon Pendulum onward, Japanese virtual pets have followed the lead of the "DigiMon" localization to an extent. Although they continue to be explicit about Digimon death in manual text, they also generally use computers to represent a dead Digimon instead of grave markers/Ohakadamon (the Digimon Pendulum even reuses the "Megalithic Mainframe" computer sprite from the "DigiMon" line). The only subsequent device to date to return to using the grave marker/Ohakadamon is the Digital Monster Ver.20th. Unlike the international version of the originals, the international version of the Ver.20th (also just called "DigiMon") retains the grave marker and the concept of death without alteration.

Digital Monster Ver. S

When a Digimon dies, a grave marker/Ohakadamon (using the matching design for the species' version of origin) is displayed in its folder to signify its death to the player. Clicking on the grave clears it away and makes room in the folder for a new Digitama to be housed.

When a Digimon dies, a grave marker/Ohakadamon is displayed in its slot to signify its death to the player. Pressing the A Button while viewing a grave prompts the player to erase it and make room in the slot for a new Digitama to be housed.
